Not All Holes Are Created Equally Empty Re: Not All Holes Are Created Equally

Any hobbit out tonight was sure to be surprised; for it wasn’t often they were visited by dwarves, Talin thought as he clucked his tongue at his pony to slow her down. Of course, it wasn’t often dwarves had any cause to be visiting the hobbits , so it should be of no surprise to anyone that they didn’t. If it weren’t him riding into their home, Talin would never have believed it to have happened. The dwarves took the same path as he, south of the Shire to Bree and back the same way as they came. But this time was different. His partner for the job they’d been called to do had fallen ill and returned home after some time of trying to suffer through it. Talin had gone on alone. He could find help elsewhere, but the delay had meant he would have to spend a night in Shire before going on to Bree.

Truth be told, he didn’t have to stay there, but he had an inclination he might find help among the hobbits. He wasn’t sure how they would react to having a dwarf among them, but he wagered even if he found no help here, seeing their reactions would be worth the price of an inn. Being as the sun was setting, most of the little people were in their homes, but the few outside enjoying a smoke certainly looked shocked. Talin chuckled when he saw a little boy run home shouting about a hairy troll coming by on a pony. He wasn’t fond of being compared to a troll, but the child didn’t know any better so it was an amusement rather than annoyance. He was hairy, but he smelled much better than a troll, or so he hoped!

The pony’s trod clip-clopped on the little dirt road and Talin kept a sharp eye out for a place to stay. He spied a sign in the fading light and rode toward it, slowing his mount even more as to read the sign. The quaint hand-lettering reads, "The Bottomless Mug". "Sounds like a damn fine place to stay," Talin says to himself, hopping off his pony and tying her up. The pony gives a nicker and he pats her nose before removing his pack and going inside.

It's a relatively casual night, quite ordinary in its going-on. Hobson is having his evening half-pint and chips at one of the tables just off the bar. He's well out of his tweens - well out of, he likes to say, since he fancies himself quite a bit further along in his sensibilities than most tweenaged hobbits - but not quite of any sort of respectable age at only thirty-three, so he doesn't push his fraternization with the older lot at the bar. This isn't the sort of place that the youngers like to come and hover about, so he's quite content to sit and have a nice drink and some chips, and listen to the elders talk, and ask a tale off a traveler as they now and again pass through. He supposes he might seem a little more respectable if he didn't ask after tales, but it's his pleasure to do so, and as long as he's not itching after an adventure, he doesn't see the harm in having a story now and again. He's in no particular rush to get any older, glad as he is that he's not any younger, so he feels he may as well act his age, and that comes with a certain amount of restrained curiosity.

The restraint on his curiosity is tested when the door opens at a reasonable but late-growing hour, and instead of another regular patron of the pub, a dwarf comes through the door, laden with a traveler's pack and asking after a room. Hobson does his best not to stare, but he wishes he had his pipe instead of a couple of chips in his hand, watching the stranger quite curiously and with fairly open interest. The elders at the bar all seem to share his surprise, though a few of them seem to grow quite uncomfortable, having long outgrown any sort of curiosity, and they hurry out back to their homes instead of waiting around to see what sort of business brings a dwarf to town.

Hobson finds himself chewing his food quite thoroughly as he listens to see what this interesting turn of events is about, but the barkeeper just prices the room without a fuss, and there's not much for him to listen to. Sipping his mead, he continues to watch quite carefully to see whether the dwarf will join them - well, not join them, but maybe conceed to dining in their presence... though if what he's heard of dwarves is true, he may not be allowed, for fear of emptying out the kitchen and it's pantry. At any rate, it's a fascinating thought to Hobson, and he's quite more curious than usual.

The dwarf in question offers a hearty smile at all the on=lookers. It's odd to find himself the center of attention, especially the center of hobbit attention, but Talin's certainly friendly about it. He glances about the place, taking in the folk in their wee vests and short pants. It makes him smile wider. Next to these folk, he looks right tall! He wagers he could get used to feeling tall, though all these hairless faces could take some getting used to! These lads could do with some nice, bushy beards. He chuckles to himself at the thought of it, picturing these scrawny lads with big, braided beards.

His attention turns to the little man behind the counter. He's more than ready to offer a room, but how would he feel about feeding a dwarf, Talin wonders. This brings another little chuckle. IF this hobbit's heard anything of the dwarf-folk, it is likely they like shiny things and they like to eat. There seems to be mostly older hobbit-folk here. Except for one. That particular one seems very interested in a certain dwarf at the moment. Talin wonders if the lad will speak to him or sit and stare awhile.

Talin returns his gaze to the barkeep. “Aye son, I would gladly have a room from ye, if you will have a traveler such as meself!” He smiles, which makes teeth appear from his massive beard as if by magic. “Tell me somethin' laddy, would ye be prepared to feed a dwarf?”

The keeper nods, pulling out a pad and jotting down a room number, and swapping out the note for a key somewhere behind the bar. "Certainly, certainly, a dwarf's money is just as good as any here. Won't you have a seat and I'll erm, set the kitchen on notice." The poor keep glances around the shelves and pulls over a stool to stand on, taking down a rather large mug - certainly larger than Hobson has ever seen taken out for a guest. Folk their size are gluttons over a pint, and that piece is certainly larger. It might even be a whole quart! But it seems about the right size for their hairy guest, and the keep fills it dutifully for the strange new patron, and then disappears into the kitchen to let the cook know to keep the pantry open. He returns with a bowl of biscuits and a plate of butter and jam, assuring the dwarf that more is on the way. Hobson continues to munch on his own supper as he watches on in interest.

This draws another smile from the dwarf. The little hobbit innkeeper has reacted incredibly well for being nicely told he'll be eaten out of house and home. He eagerly accepts the biscuits, picking up three in one hand and buttering and putting jam on all of them at once with his other hand. He then puts all of the biscuits in his mouth at once, chewing heartily while crumbs fall into his beard. He takes this time to look around at the hobbits. He seems to have the attention of several of them, he is a novelty here after all. He also notes that the young-looking hobbit is still watching him. He offers the lad a nod and a crumb-filled smile.
